Jaipur is the capital city of Rajasthan. It is popularly known as the Pink City and is noted for its wide roads and spacious gardens. Jantar Mantar is another famous tourist spot which was originally an observatory built by Sawai Jai Singh II. It has over 16 astronomical instruments all built in stone and marble which were used in days gone by to measure time, predict eclipses as well as draw up horoscopes and forecast agricultural activities.
Amber Fort in Jaipur is built on Maota Lake entirely of white marble and red sandstone. It is a mammoth fort built on the hills and is a steep climb which will get you to the main entrance of Suraj Pol. Inside the fort is a huge courtyard or Jaleb Chowk. Amber Fort was built by Man Singh I but was left incomplete so had to be completed by Jai Singh I. Sheesh Mahal inside the fort has got its name from the number of mirrors which are used in its decoration. Carvings on the walls and ceilings depict hunting scenes and are highlighted by thousands of mirror work in intricate designs on the walls and pillars.
